What Is Wellbeing? A Simple Guide to Feeling More Like Yourself
Wellbeing is a word we hear a lot — in health magazines, at work, in mental health conversations. But what does it really mean?
Put simply, wellbeing is about how you feel and function — mentally, emotionally, and physically — in your everyday life. It’s not about being happy all the time or having everything figured out. It’s about having the internal resources to handle life’s ups and downs, and feeling a sense of connection, purpose, and steadiness.
More Than Just Mental Health
Wellbeing includes mental health, but it’s broader than that. It’s how you’re doing as a whole person.
It includes:
Emotional health – feeling calm, connected, and able to manage emotions
Physical health – having energy, rest, and a sense of vitality
Mental clarity – being able to focus, reflect, and respond with intention
Relationships – feeling supported and safe with others
Meaning and purpose – having a sense that your life matters and you're living in alignment with your values
When your wellbeing is cared for, you feel more like yourself. You’re better able to respond to stress, enjoy the good moments, and stay grounded through the harder ones.
Wellbeing Isn’t Perfection — It’s Balance
Many people believe wellbeing means “being calm all the time” or “having no anxiety,” but this isn’t true. Wellbeing is not about avoiding hard emotions — it’s about being able to move through them with awareness and support.
It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed, sad, frustrated, or disconnected at times. The difference is how resourced and supported you feel in navigating those moments.
What Impacts Wellbeing?
Lots of things can affect your wellbeing — both positively and negatively. These include:
Life events (like grief, relationship changes, or work stress)
Daily habits (like sleep, food, movement, and digital use)
Environment and surroundings
Internal dialogue and emotional patterns
Your ability to rest, reflect, and regulate your nervous system
Wellbeing isn’t static — it shifts, and that’s okay. What matters is checking in with yourself regularly and giving your body and mind what they need.
Supporting Your Own Wellbeing
Start small. Wellbeing doesn’t have to mean a full life overhaul. It can begin with tiny shifts, like:
Taking a slow breath when you feel tension rising
Going outside for 5 minutes of fresh air
Talking kindly to yourself in moments of self-doubt
Setting a boundary around screen time or work hours
Reaching out for support, instead of pushing through alone
