Stress, Anxiety, or Burnout? How to Tell the Difference

You might feel overwhelmed, mentally exhausted, or constantly on edge — but how do you know whether you’re dealing with stress, anxiety, or burnout?

These words are often used interchangeably, but they describe different experiences. Knowing the difference can help you better understand what you’re going through — and what kind of support you need.

What Is Stress?

Stress is your body’s natural response to pressure, deadlines, or challenges. It’s often short-term and linked to something specific — like a big presentation, family tension, or a busy schedule.

You might feel:

  • Irritable or tense

  • Overstimulated or wired

  • Headaches, muscle tension, or a racing heart

  • Like you’re “just trying to get through the day”

Stress isn’t always negative — but when it builds up or doesn’t ease off, it can become harmful.

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety often starts as stress — but stays, even when the stressful situation has passed. It’s more future-focused and can feel like worry that doesn’t switch off.

You might notice:

  • Constant overthinking or worst-case scenario thinking

  • Trouble sleeping or relaxing, even when things seem okay

  • A sense of dread or fear with no clear reason

  • Physical symptoms like nausea, chest tightness, or shallow breathing

Anxiety lives in both the mind and body. It can be triggered by stress, but becomes a pattern of its own — especially when your nervous system is on high alert.

What Is Burnout?

Burnout is what happens when stress and anxiety go unmanaged for too long. It’s more than just feeling tired — it’s emotional, mental, and physical depletion.

You might feel:

  • Numb, flat, or disconnected

  • Like nothing helps, and everything feels too hard

  • Constant fatigue, even after rest

  • A loss of motivation, focus, or sense of purpose

Burnout often shows up in people who care a lot, give a lot, and push through for too long — without space to rest or receive support.

Why It Matters

You don’t need a label to know you’re struggling — but understanding the difference can give you insight and permission to pause.

  • If you’re stressed, you might need boundaries and rest.

  • If you’re anxious, calming tools and emotional support can help.

  • If you’re burnt out, you may need deeper recovery and reconnection.

You’re Not Weak — You’re Human

Whether you're feeling wired, worried, or worn out, know this: you’re not alone, and you’re not broken. These are human responses to life’s demands — and you deserve support in navigating them.
